As an HR Consultant you will be responsible for the following:
1) Strategy Development
- Recommend and participate in developing HR Policies & Procedures
- Direct and provide support for manpower planning
- Facilitate movement of skill fit to ensure organization requirements are met. (Including terminations and layoffs)
- Provide counselling and assistance to managers and supervisors with manpower vacancies
2) Labour and Employee Relations Management
- Assist with the management of all union interactions, including grievances, arbitrations, letters of understanding, and collective agreement negotiations for 2 separate bargaining units on site.
- Participate in the collective bargaining processes, including managing the company-union negotiations.
- Act as a subject matter expert to Management, Human Resources and employees on the interpretation and administration of collective agreements.
- Participate in Company's role in the grievance, arbitration and mediation process, including the preparation and presentation of defense positions, and engagement and instruction of external Counsel.
- Prepares evidence in complex cases (grievances, arbitrations and litigations), working with Legal Counsel to recommend and implement courses of action, settlements and approaches for management.
- Facilitate the management, application and interpretation of the Progressive Discipline process. Provides training and coaching to Management and Human Resources on the policies as well as practical application of disciplinary and performance improvement measures.
- Manages the termination and workforce reduction process for Bargaining Unit employees through Progressive Discipline or workforce reduction initiatives. This includes liaising with Management and Legal functions to ensure that legislative and policy compliance.
- Manages and oversees the site Physical Demands Analysis program as it relates to all Bargaining Unit positions.
- Works with the Occupational Health Center and line management to optimize the early and safe return to work of all Bargaining Unit employees from injury or illness, including the modification of duties or accommodation based upon organizational needs and employee medical status.
- Coordinates the site workforce planning for Bargaining Unit positions, including retirement programs, layoffs, restructuring and recruiting as required.
3) Human Resources Consulting
- Counsels management and employees regarding performance issues, conflict situations, ensuring confidentiality, fairness and sensitivity.
- Utilizes appropriate human interaction techniques and methodologies.
- Facilitates the resolution of problems between supervisors and employees. Ensure interventions are timely and confidentiality is maintained.
- Coach and counsel assigned area/group personnel regarding performance issues, conflict situations and career discussions
- Maintain relationships with employees at all levels to remain in touch with the organization.
- Interacts with personnel at all levels and maintains current knowledge of change in systems, practices, processes, procedures, policies in order to provide appropriate HR support which meets the needs of the organization.
- Manage all activities in Internal and external hiring recruitment and selection processes for designated areas
In order to accomplish this you will possess the following:
- Must have a bachelor degree or equivalent
- Must have a HRPA (CHRP) designation; or working towards designation
- Industry Labor Relations experience strongly preferred.
- Must have 5-10 years Human Resource experience.
- The ability to deal with personnel at all levels is a basic requirement of this position.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and strong supportive behavioural characteristics.
- Experience in human intervention techniques, facilitation and behavioural analysis.
- Strong oral and written communication skills. Presentation ability in front of audiences of various sizes.
- Understanding and acceptance of working in a unionized environment.
- Good judgement and the ability to listen, and sensitivity to others.
- The individual must be able to work independently.
- It is imperative that the incumbent has the ability to identify and resolve issues and conflict as they arise.
