Job Description

Who are we?

Armed with a handful of gifted developers, Big Viking Games sailed into action in 2011, set on taking the social and mobile gaming world by storm. From Facebook to iOS, Big Viking Games has demonstrated a mastery of the free-to-play model on a variety of platforms. In a short time, the company has proudly amassed millions of loyal fans across its many popular titles with no signs of slowing down. In just three years, we've grown from humble beginnings in London, ON to over 65 Vikings with a second studio in Toronto, ON. With even bigger goals for 2015, Big Viking Games will need reinforcements. And that's where you come in.

The nitty-gritty:

Big Viking Games is on the hunt for a Remote Software Developer. This individual will be highly motivated, with an eagle eye for detail that thinks, eats, and dreams in code, in addition to having the discipline to stay on task outside of an office environment. You’ve got a strong knowledge of HTML5, Javascript, Java, Node.js, AS3, and PHP, and for you, awesome code means it’s as beautiful as it is functional and efficient. You have a range of high-quality projects under your belt and you excel in solo and team settings. You’re a big picture thinker who can analyze technical requirements and make sure deadlines are met on time.

Sound good so far? To make it even better, you get to do it from the comfort of your couch, from a sunny patio or your favorite coffee shop. Morning traffic? Say goodbye. Snowmageddon outside? No big deal. Got a favourite onesie? Rock it all day!

The Duties:

  • Design, program, test, optimize, and support an array of web and mobile games from start to finish. Your projects are your babies.
  • Work on various titles and related engines from implementing web interfaces using HTML5, CSS3, AS3, and Javascript, to writing server code using PHP & Java. There is no coding task you can’t handle!
  • Work collaboratively with fellow Vikings from our art & design teams to bring projects to life that shine, inside & out.
  • Identify system issues, anticipate problems, provide estimates, and implement solutions. You’re the Justice League of developers. That’s right. The whole league.
  • Engage in design reviews and discussions to provide feedback. After all, identifying a problem is the first step to solving it.
  • Write functional documentation for projects as necessary. Organization makes every Vikings life easier.
  • Research and stay ahead of the pack on emerging web and game development news and tech. Who said Vikings aren’t well-read?

The Essentials:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience a developer (huge plus if it's a game development background).
  • Solid understanding of AJAX, web sockets and client server development.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in a high-pressure environment. Think James Bond, only instead of shooting things, you code.
  • You can flex both analytical and creative muscles. All Vikings have muscles.
  • Fantastic communication skills and the ability to present ideas in a professional and user-friendly manner.

Bonus Points:
  • You have developed online games before; either for work or play.
  • You adapt quickly and you're not afraid to learn more about coding.
  • You love your craft and your passion for development goes beyond 9 to 5.
  • You have an affinity for gaming.
  • Do you have github account? Or a portfolio with apps / games you've made? Share it with us, we'd love to see it.

The Loot:
  • Competitive salaries with generous time off policies
  • Health, dental, vision, life and disability benefits
  • Employee stock option plan; this way we all get to celebrate in the success
  • We are proud to be self-funded because this allows us to work and deliver the projects we are proud of

Becoming a Viking:

Are you cut from our cloth? Does the idea of working for a gaming company and doing what you love every day get you so excited you kind of want to scream? Great! Send us your resume and cover letter.
