We also offer settlement services to newcomers, employment programs, and youth programs. YMCA of Southwestern Ontario operates one overnight camp on Beausoleil Island in Muskoka, YMCA Camp Queen Elizabeth. We also have 13 Health & Fitness branches across Southwestern Ontario.

Position: Settlement Advisor, Newcomer Youth YMAP Program Sarnia

Location: Sarnia

Start Date: ASAP

End Date : March 31st, 2027 (Conditional on funding)

Salary: $ 28.42 per hour

As part of your total compensation:

In this role, you will:

  • 20 hours a week
  • In person
  • Monday to Friday (2:00 pm - 6:00 pm )
  • Scheduling hours may vary based on need
  • Occasional Fridays, evenings and weekends

  • Act as a YMCA ambassador, demonstrating YMCA core values in your daily work
  • Provide settlement services to YMAP youth, which include but are not limited to conducting needs assessments to identify needs, assets, and obstacles to success
  • Creates settlement plans and provides information and referrals.
  • Organize and facilitate regular engaging group workshops for youth
  • Maintain accurate statistical information to track client needs and complete required reports
  • Maintain and expand the YMAP client base through outreach, which includes community visits, developing outreach materials, and promoting community networks
  • Supervise volunteers for the YMAP program
  • Determine eligibility for the YMAP program and transportation support
  • Refers newcomers to appropriate internal and external programs and resources
  • Ensure that YMAP applications and forms have all the required and accurate information and the correct Immigration documentation
  • Represent the agency on appropriate community networks focused on immigration issues and refugee status and work in conjunction with other agencies and community groups to coordinate/facilitate the delivery of services
  • Advocates on clients' behalf, when appropriate, with agencies, organizations, and institutions
  • Promote and maintain a safe and clean YMAP program environment.
  • Provides leadership and direction in assigned projects that benefit our clients and the YMCA i.e., Strong Kids, Peace Week, etc.
  • Assist with the creation of Program reports such as attendance(database), narrative reports, curriculum, and school presentations
  • Assist program facilitators with the YMAP sessions
  • Create an educational, enjoyable, and supervised environment for youth by planning and implementing programming.
  • Attend Community and YMCA Orientation meetings and events when required
  • Work in a safe and respectful environment with your team members
  • Other duties as required

Education and Skills Qualifications:

  • Post-Secondary Degree or Diploma in a related Human Services, Counselling, or Education discipline and Recreation and/or any related area
  • Knowledge of Immigration Law, and government-funded/ community programs (i.e. Ontario Works, Legal Aid, CAS, etc.)
  • Fluency in an additional language is an asset
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiar with using a database
  • Proficiency in using online digital platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, or Google Meet; required to provide virtual/remote service
  • Demonstrated understanding and sensitivity towards the challenges facing newcomers
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Settlement Counseling and solution-based counseling background
  • Proven ability to understand and interpret complex documentation, applications, etc.
  • Comfortable and effective communicating in group situations and delivering effective and engaging presentations
  • Previous experience working within the Settlement Sector and with youth (an asset)
  • Familiar with youth services in the local area
  • Comfortable using public transportation
  • CPR and First Aid training
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Current and acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening is a condition of employment for all staff and volunteers.
  • The YMCA of Southwestern Ontario has a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy. It has been suspended effective June 30, 2022. The policy may need to be re-instated in the future should our public health situation become such that it would be a recommended requirement
